What is dark meat chicken?
🍗 Thighs are the upper leg; drumsticks are the lower leg. Both are dark meat. Breast and wings are white meat. These names describe the muscle, whether or not you eat the skin.
FSIS explains that myoglobin contributes meat’s color and that muscles used for exercise are darker. USDA’s chicken trade descriptions identify the white and dark cuts. See the official sources below.
White vs dark meat chicken: USDA nutrition
Each row is 3 oz (85 g) of cooked, roasted edible chicken, with bones excluded. “Meat only” excludes skin; “meat and skin” includes it in the same 85 g total. These are separate USDA SR Legacy records, not a calculation that adds skin to a skinless portion. No breading or sauce is included.

Calculated from USDA per-100-g values × 0.85. Calories round to whole numbers; grams and milligrams to at most one decimal, without a trailing .0. Calculations use unrounded USDA values. The serving uses the requested 85 g convention for 3 oz. Leg means thigh plus drumstick, without an attached back portion. Cuts appear in the same order in both tables.
Are chicken thighs dark meat? Is a chicken leg dark meat?
Yes to both. A whole leg is the thigh plus the drumstick. In everyday US speech, “chicken leg” can also mean a drumstick, which is dark meat too. A leg quarter includes an attached back portion, so it is not interchangeable with the leg records used here.
For cut-specific serving sizes, see chicken thigh calories, chicken drumstick calories and baked chicken leg calories. Those pages cover their own preparations and portions.
Are chicken wings white or dark meat?
Wings are white meat in USDA’s chicken trade descriptions. A wing drumette is part of a wing, even though it looks like a small drumstick. The leg’s drumstick is dark meat. The skin does not change either classification.
See chicken wing calories by serving for its roasted and fried comparisons, and chicken breast calories for breast portions.
Is dark meat chicken bad for you?
Compare the cut, skin and portion rather than treating the color as a health verdict. In these roasted, meat-only records, thigh has 152 calories and 6.9 g fat per 85 g; breast has 140 calories and 3 g fat. Thigh has 1 mg iron and 1.6 mg zinc; breast has 0.9 mg iron and 0.9 mg zinc.
Each meat-and-skin record here has more calories and fat than its meat-only counterpart at the same cooked weight. Iron and zinc vary by cut too; the tables show each value. These nutrient differences do not establish an individual health outcome.
