Calories in protein: grams to kcal calculator
Protein supplies 4 kcal per gram under the general conversion. Add carbohydrate at 4 kcal/g and fat at 9 kcal/g to calculate energy from these three macros.
Calculate your estimate
Enable JavaScript to edit inputs. The worked examples below remain available without it.
For an exact gram amount, enter the same value in both boxes. Enter 0 for macros you want to leave out.
Estimate: 100 kcal
General 4/4/9 conversion of the entered grams. This is not a full food-label energy calculation.
Worked examples from the same calculator
Unlisted macros are zero; equal endpoints mean one exact gram input. Only the final output is rounded using decimal half-up rules.
| Input scenario | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Protein 25 g | 100 kcal |
| Protein 25 to 30 g | 100 to 120 kcal |
| P 25 g, C 40 g, F 10 g | 350 kcal |
Protein grams to calories
Protein kcal = 4 × protein grams. This is an energy conversion, not a daily protein requirement or a measure of protein quality. There is no need to assign a made-up food database record to pure arithmetic.
General macro calories: 4P + 4C + 9F
P, C and F are grams of protein, carbohydrate and fat. For known gram amounts, enter equal lower and upper values. For input ranges, multiply each lower gram amount by its factor and add them, then repeat with the upper amounts. These are input scenarios, not confidence intervals.
Why the result may differ from a food label
This tool uses only the general protein, carbohydrate and fat factors. It does not apply separate rules for alcohol, fiber or sugar alcohols, or food-specific Atwater factors. Food-label rounding and different energy conventions can also affect a comparison; do not treat this as a complete label-energy reconstruction.
Source formulas and scope
USDA FNIC’s original wording:
Carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram, protein provides 4 calories per gram, and fat provides 9 calories per gram.
General macro estimate = 4P + 4C + 9F, in kcal with grams as input. Known inputs receive rounding only; ranges come entirely from entered gram endpoints. This tool does not apply alcohol, fiber or sugar-alcohol energy rules.
Questions and answers
How many calories are in protein?
Under the general conversion, protein provides 4 kcal per gram. Multiply the grams by 4 and round the final kcal result.
Can I calculate calories from a protein gram range?
Yes. Multiply the lower and upper protein gram amounts by 4 separately. Set carbohydrate and fat to zero for protein-only energy.
