How many steps in a mile walking?

The table estimates steps for one mile of level walking. Taller adults tend to take longer steps; in this model, a faster walking pace also lengthens each step. Choose your height and pace instead of assuming one step count fits everyone.

Looking for a step calculator? Miles to steps converts a planned route into an estimated count. These examples use 5 ft 7 in and 3 mph.

How to calculate steps into miles

Multiply your steps by your step length in meters, then divide by the meters in one mile. For the reverse, multiply miles by meters per mile and divide by step length.

  • Miles = steps × step length (m) ÷ 1,609.344
  • Steps = miles × 1,609.344 ÷ step length (m)
  • Kilometers = miles × 1.609344
  • Minutes = miles ÷ walking speed (mph) × 60

For a 5 ft 7 in adult at 3 mph, the unrounded model step length is used throughout. It displays as 0.71 m. That makes 10,000 steps about 4.39 mi. Use a measured step length if you need a more personal estimate.

Steps and miles questions

How many steps is in a mile walking?

At 5 ft 7 in and 3 mph, about 2,279 steps. Height and walking pace change step length, so use your own height for an estimate.

How many average steps in a mile should I use?

About 2,279 steps per mile is this model’s estimate for a 5 ft 7 in adult walking at 3 mph. It is an example, not a measured population average.

Does the calculator work for running?

This calculator estimates level walking only. Running changes your gait and step length, so do not use its walking estimates for a run.

How can I measure my own step length?

Walk a measured route at your usual pace. Divide its distance in meters by your counted steps to get meters per step. Repeat a few times and use the average; watches and phones can miss steps.

Sources and limits

These are estimates for level walking. CADENCE-Adults measured 76 adults aged 21–40 years on a level treadmill, with a mean height of 170.7 cm. We derive step length from speed and measured cadence, scale it to your height and interpolate between measured speeds. Step length varies from person to person; age, terrain and your gait can change it.

The model has measured walking speeds from 1 to 5 mph. This tool offers 2.5–4 mph walking paces within that range. It does not model running or predict health outcomes. Distances show two decimals; steps and minutes are rounded only after calculation.
